[Note: What is written below is based on a short excerpt from a tape about Allaah’s Names and Attributes by Sh. Riaz Ansary. It is by no means a complete discussion about the subject, but I liked his examples, and wanted to share them with you.]
Some verse which deal with the issue (translation of the meanings): In the verse where it is said, "Fa laysa ka mithlihi shay’; wa Huwa-s-samee`ul baSeer," Allaah says, ‘fa laysa ka mithlihi shay’" = there is nothing like unto Him. This (tamtheel) is something which Allah has explicitly denied. Then He says "Wa Huwa-s-Samee`ul-Baseer," and He is the All-Hearer, the All-Seer. Allaah negates likeness between His attributes and those of His creation and then He goes on to affirm the attributes of Hearing and Vision to Himself. In another verse He says, "Is the One who creates like the one who is created, would you not then take heed?" In another verse, He says, "Do you know an equal for Him?" And in another verse, He says: "There is nothing like Him." - The same concept with different phrasings. Also, this way of looking at the attributes of Allaah (i.e. likening them to those of His creation) is rationally unsound because we know that Allaah is different from His creation in His dhaat (being/entity/self) therefore it would make sense that there would be a difference between Allah and the creation in qualities. Qualities of a perfect being would not be like qualities of an imperfect being. We can also say that we know from our own experience that the very same word can mean very different things and be used to describe two different beings, or two different things in the creation. If we speak about the foot of an ant and a foot of an elephant, we are speaking about things which share the same name but have drastically different characteristics. And also to take it even a further step, the foot of a mountain, the foot of a bed, these words have also a linguistic meaning and they summon an image in our mind, but a foot of a mountain is completely different from foot of an ant or an animal.. Likewise, the eye of an oyster, the eye of an ant, the eye of a hawk, the eye of a hurricane, the eye of a needle, these names are all accurately applied to these various created things and yet they have very different qualities.
